Our Town https://wbschool.edu.gh/our-town/ Wed, 24 Aug 2016 17:53:43 +0000 http://wbschool.edu.gh/?p=273 obuasi

Obuasi is a charming mining town that dates back to colonial times. It’s easy to get to — only 58 kilometers southwest of Kumasi — but it feels a world away. Set in a basin in Adansi, with the Ashanti Goldfields Company now AngloGold Ashanti mine at the heart of town, Obuasi is a beautiful place to learn and grow. While quiet, safe, and comfortable, Obuasi is filled with amazing shops, restaurants and bookstores, boutiques, hotels, and cafés. Our students love that they can get an ice cream, a haircut, or pizza right in town.  Students enjoy miles of hiking trails at their backdoor. The Obuasi airport and the operation of commercial flights make Obuasi only a 30 minute flight from Accra, the capital city of Ghana.

GHANAIAN ARTISTES SHINE IN DENMARK https://wbschool.edu.gh/ghanaian-artistes-shine-in-denmark/ Fri, 17 Jun 2016 19:03:08 +0000 http://wbschool.edu.gh/?p=163 Afro-Pop singer, Noella Wiyaala last week mesmerized fans in the Danish city of Aarhus with a magnetic stagecraft at the 2016 edition of the Pan African Arts Festival (PANAFEST).

In a skimpy costume made from African fabrics, she engaged the audience at the Aarhus Botanical Garden with a dramatic fusion of sounds that they obviously enjoyedAlongside elements of tribal folk music, the concert provided a solid platform for the promotion of rhythms and a soulful voice from the Upper West Region of Ghana.

African Footprint Legends (AFL) also took the stage by storm with a curious blend of ritualistic rhythms with highlife. Employing a combination of Western and traditional instruments from Ghana and Burkina Faso, the group surprised the audience with music that is contemporary, but with it’s heart firmly embedded in traditional Africa.

With musicians and dancers from Denmark, Ghana and Burkina Faso, AFL turned the stage into a delectable music grove for both audience and musicians.

In a related concert at V 58, a performance hall in downtown Aarhus, Ghanaian reggae star Shasha Marley, who is noted for his Franciscan Friar-like costumes, swayed the cheering crowd with his charismatic voice and an impressive stage presence.

Full of energy, Marley who was joined by Ghanaian and Danish musicians, displayed a real sense of creativity and absolute skill as reggae fans among the audience applauded, danced and joined in the singing.

Also on stage at NY V 58 were the Rasta Mizizi Family (Kenya) and Shungu Afro Beat (Denmark) while the Botanical Garden also hosted DJs, acrobats, poets, storytellers, art, crafts and food exhibitions as well as fashion shows.

ENERGY CRISIS, ACCESS TO FINANCE, BANE OF ALL SECTORS https://wbschool.edu.gh/energy-crisis-access-to-finance-bane-of-all-sectors/ Fri, 17 Jun 2016 19:02:13 +0000 http://wbschool.edu.gh/?p=161 The energy crisis and access to finance continue to be the two leading challenges burdening all sectors of the Ghanaian economy, a University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) report on the economic environment and business performance has revealed.

According to the maiden edition of the Ghana Business Development Review (GBDR), a research-based biennial review of development and performance of businesses across various sectors of the economy, efforts at ending the power crisis should continue, while innovative solutions be found to the age-old lack of access to credit which impacts negatively on business operations.

The mining, hospitality and manufacturing sectors bore the largest brunt of the power challenges, it said.

These findings were contained in the report which tracks the performance of businesses, analyses the business environment and provides an outlook for growth and investment opportunities to assist businesses and prospective investors to make informed decisions.

Maiden edition

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, launched the 232-page report in Accra last Thursday.

The GBDR has 15 chapters, starting with an overview of the economic and business environment, with the rest covering sectors such as the manufacturing, agribusiness, mining, real estate, tourism, financial services, health and pharmaceutical sectors.

A unique feature of the report is its approach to capture the figures and facts from the firm level (micro level), as opposed to many reports which look at aggregate numbers from the macro perspective.

The Dean of the UGBS, Prof. Joshua Yindenaba Abor, who led the team to put the report together, said the energy crisis emerged as a cross-cutting challenge which required greater efforts to resolve.
